Someone by the name of Airfoil posted this interesting question on the High Flight Board:
So I watched Stormy Weather last week for the first time in over ten years...
Is it just me, or does Kit seem a bit out-of-character in this episode? He loves aviation and all, but for an ex-pirate orphan, I didn't expect him to be that trusting. I thought his dialog especially was out-of-character.
I liked the episode in regards to Baloo. Ed Gilbert was spot on and it showed a character flaw in Baloo: it's easy for him to go into despair.
*****
Personally, I agree with him. Part of Kit's out-of-character-ness could have been due to the fact that he was voiced by Alan Roberts instead of R.J. Williams in that ep, thus making him sound more childish and naive. R.J. Williams gave Kit more of a sarcastic, edgy tone.
Thoughts?
Sarcastic, edgey tone? No, R.J. William made Kit sound more mature than childish like Alan Roberts did.
And you're right, it does seems a bit out of character for Kit to be that trusting, considering he barely trusted Baloo at first in P&L. But I think this episode was more directed to display Baloo and Kit's relationship as surrogate father and son and how they'd be if Kit left
The effect of Kit's departure was mainly more noticeable with Baloo's depression and despair. "Okay, I surrender. Lock me up, I got nothing to live for anyway." If Rebecca was effected by Kit's departure, it's hard to tell the way she was determined to move on with her business, but I think she was very sad that Kit left. She always liked him like a surrogate son, that much is evident in the uncut full length movie of P&L when she was singing
Home is Where the Heart is. She was sad to see him go, she just didn't show it much, but she look sad when she wasn't thinking about the business, the sad look on her face when pointed out Baloo to the police officer was evident enough. She basically hid her sadness by wrapping herself up in her business.
As Molly wasn't in this episode, we can only imagine her reaction-- crying and yelling at Baloo to bring Kit back while banging her fists on him is probably what would've happened and should've been in this episode, it would've shown her sisterly love for Kit.
Yes, Kit was a bit out of character in the trusting department, but in all other respect, he was still himself and still pretty much in character.
As we saw, he started to get wary of Dan when he wouldn't pay Kit's full salary, the dressing room shouldn't cost that much that he'd end up with just one dollar. And he grew even more wary of Dan when that lying rat disregarded Kit's safety by starting the show, despite the coming storm. That shows that Kit is not stupid, he's very intelligent. And so he knows when to draw the line in his trusting people.
Remember, we all make mistakes and Kit made his by trusting Dan. And Dan gained Kit's trust through lies, manipulation and flattery.
And honestly, I feel that episode was more set not long after P&L and he was still learning to trust the right people, he just happened to trust the wrong person.
All in all, I thought this was a great episode, though I hated Dan with a passion and still do.
Sincerely,
